Can a chiropractor help with sciatica?
Chiropractors commonly assess and manage leg pain that relates to the lower back, often called sciatica. At Restored Living, your first visit focuses on understanding what's going on — your history, a careful neurological assessment, and how your back, pelvis and hips are moving. If chiropractic care is appropriate, we'll explain the options. If your findings suggest you need imaging, medical review or a different kind of care, we'll tell you and help you get it.

What people often describe
- Pain that travels from the low back or buttock into the thigh, calf or foot
- Tingling, pins and needles or numbness down one leg
- Discomfort that is worse with sitting, bending or driving
- Symptoms that change with certain positions, or flare after a long day
What we may assess
Every assessment is guided by your presentation. For sciatica-type symptoms it may include:
- Your history — onset, how far symptoms travel, what eases and aggravates them
- Neurological checks such as reflexes, sensation and strength in the legs
- Nerve tension tests, such as a straight leg raise, where appropriate
- How your lower back, pelvis and hips move and bear load
- Any previous imaging or reports, and whether further investigation may be warranted
Looking beyond the leg
Leg pain is the starting point — and we take it seriously. Alongside a thorough neurological check, we consider posture, structure and movement through the low back, pelvis and hips as parts of the broader picture. Our aim is to understand how your body is adapting before we recommend anything, and to be clear when something needs a different kind of care. Read about our approach.
When to seek urgent medical care
Sciatica-type pain is usually not dangerous, but some symptoms need prompt medical attention. Contact your GP, call 000 or go to the nearest emergency department if leg or back pain comes with:
- Loss of bladder or bowel control, or difficulty passing urine
- Numbness around the groin, genitals, buttocks or inner thighs
- Progressive weakness in the legs, or a foot that drops or catches when walking
- Symptoms in both legs at once
- Fever, unexplained weight loss, or a history of cancer

Common questions
Is sciatica a diagnosis?
Not exactly. "Sciatica" describes pain travelling down the leg along the path of the sciatic nerve. Part of the assessment is working out what may be contributing, and whether your findings suit chiropractic care.
Should I get an MRI first?
Not necessarily. Many people don't need imaging. If your history or neurological findings suggest it's warranted, we'll explain why and help arrange a referral through your GP.
Do I need a referral?
No — you can book directly. If you've already had scans or seen your GP or a specialist, bring any reports along to your first visit.
