Can a chiropractor help with upper and mid-back tension?
Chiropractors commonly assess and manage tension through the upper and mid-back. At Restored Living, your first visit focuses on understanding what's going on — your history, how your mid-back, ribs, shoulders and neck move, and how posture and other areas may relate to your concern. If chiropractic care is appropriate, we'll explain the options. If something needs a different kind of care, we'll tell you and help you get it.

What people often describe
- A persistent ache or "knot" between the shoulder blades
- Upper back tightness after desk work, driving or carrying children
- Stiffness after surfing, paddling, swimming or overhead sport
- A feeling of being rounded through the upper back
What we may assess
Every assessment is guided by your presentation. For shoulder and mid-back tension it may include:
- Your history — onset, work, sport, sleep and past injuries
- How your mid-back rotates, bends and extends
- Rib and shoulder blade movement
- Shoulder movement and strength, where appropriate
- How neighbouring regions, like the neck and lower back, are moving
Looking beyond the shoulder blades
Mid-back tension is the starting point — and we take it seriously. Alongside it, we consider posture, structure and movement as parts of the broader picture. The upper back links the neck, shoulders and lower back, so how those areas are moving is part of what we look at before we recommend anything. Read about our approach.
When to seek urgent medical care
Upper and mid-back tension is usually not serious, but pain in this area can occasionally relate to the heart, lungs or other organs. Call 000 or go to the nearest emergency department if back pain comes with:
- Chest pain, pressure or tightness, or pain spreading to the arm, neck or jaw
- Shortness of breath, or pain that is sharper when breathing in
- Fever or feeling generally unwell
- Pain following a fall, collision or other significant trauma
- Unexplained weight loss, night pain that doesn't ease, or a history of cancer

Common questions
Is massage or chiropractic better for upper back tension?
They're different approaches and many people use both. Our assessment looks at how your spine, ribs and shoulders are moving, and we're happy to work alongside your massage therapist or other practitioners.
I surf or paddle — should I mention that?
Yes, please do. Regular paddling, swimming and overhead sport are useful context for how your upper back and shoulders are adapting.
Do I need a referral?
No — you can book directly. If you've seen another practitioner or had scans, bring any reports along.
